Guru is India’s contribution to the world. No other place in the world had the concept of a Guru.
It is said that though Bhagwan Buddha got enlightenment in Gaya, on the Baisakh Purnima which is commonly known as Buddha Purnima. After a rest of some days, he travelled westward to Sarnath near Varanasi, where he met his friends and gave his first talk as Guru on the Purnima of Aashadh. Aashadh Purnima was thereafter called Guru Purnima because Buddha emerged in the role of a Guru on this day. Simultaneously it is on this day, his friends became true Shishyas. So Guru Purnima is a celebration for both the Guru & the Shishya.
