This is a simple but a very powerful meditation. In this technique you are advised to dis-identify yourself with everything, all ideas, all concepts, your body, your mind, your emotions, everything and remain a detached observer without any choice.
This is basically, an understanding. The technique is based on the same understanding that the Vedas have given as neti-neti, not this, not this. When you go on excluding everything one by one, as not this not this, till there is nothing left to be excluded; then what remains is the real you. You cannot know it, it is unknowable, but you can be that, in fact you are that.
Here, the same understanding has been given as a meditation technique and when you go into the process of disidentification with everything, you reach a point where nothing is left to disidentify with and you simply become a choiceless observer and with that you also see the observer and the observed as one.
Your problem is identification that limits you because identification is always selective, and it cuts you off from the total. You identify with your family, you identify with your country, you identify with your body, you identify with your thoughts and emotions, and all these create a pseudo identity that you take to be yourself. Any identification limits and is in the root of all your problems. Identification is your bondage. A pseudo identity is not only limiting but painful. Everything is changing; everything is in a constant flow and identifying with certain things hampers your flow resulting in pain and bondage. So, you have stop all identification and let go.
Once you begin to dis-identify layer by layer you become expanded, you feel light and unburdened. With dis-identification numerous possibilities of everything are open, there is an uncertainty, and anything is possible, so your individual burden is released. Now you flow with the totality in a cosmic synchronicity, and you enter the realm of the choiceless awareness, as J Krishnamurty had termed it. And when you disidentify with everything and become a detached observer, you soon realize that this observer is not separate from the observed, they are one.
Sometimes people think that they must disidentify with everything else and identify with the truth, the Parmatma, the God. But how can you identify with something that you donβt even know. Do we even have an inkling of what God or Parmatma or truth mean? You have only heard from others, but you donβt know for yourself and when you donβt know how do you proceed? You can only identify or disidentify with what you know. So, this process of identifying with Parmatma or God or truth is misleading.
When Masters suggest you a way, they tell you how to proceed from where you are, from what you know, only then you can walk. You can see your identifications, so you can proceed by disidentifying yourself with them. And once there is nothing left for disidentifying with, you become that and only then you come to know Parmatma or God or truth, and not before that.
